Obituary of James E Bentley
Troy – James E. Bentley, 79, a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother passed into eternal peace at home after a long illness on September 23, 2024. Jim was born in Cohoes, NY on December 23, 1944, to the late Albina M. Murray and John H. Bentley, Sr. He graduated from Cohoes High School in 1963 and immediately joined the US Naval Reserves. He was on active duty from 1964-1966 as a Navy Corpsman during the Vietnam War. He joined with his late brother-in-law, John J. Orlyk, Sr., under the “Buddy Enlistment Program.” They remained close friends until John’s sudden passing on May 5, 2005. Upon returning from active duty, he was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Company for over 40 years, holding many positions and retiring in 2006 as Supervisor of the Gas Department. He married Monica Dudek on May 7, 1977. She predeceased him on April 8, 2020, after almost 43 years of marriage. They had a wonderful life together. They enjoyed hosting many parties at their home and traveling to many vacation destinations and Poland to meet Monica’s cousins. But most of all-they just enjoyed their time together at home. Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Brian Bentley, Kelly (Andrew) Gilbert, Eric (Theresa) Bentley. His beloved grandchildren, Dillon and Declan Gilbert and Monica Bentley. His loving sister Carol (late John) Orlyk, brothers David (late Laurie) Bentley, Dale Bentley (Rita Garzone). His brother-in-law, Robert Messier and many nieces and nephews. Also, his sister-in-law Pam Jerome, brothers-in-law Michael and Paul Dudek. He was predeceased by his parents and brother and best childhood friend John H. Bentley Jr, who tragically drowned in 1949. His dear sister, Jacqueline Bentley Messier who passed in 2015. Also, his nephew John J. Orlyk Jr. He wanted to thank his family, his niece Julie Messier, her daughter Emma, his niece Karen and his wonderful neighbors who were there for him over the years. Especially, his brother Dale, who was his best friend and caregiver during his many years of illness. Also, his sister-in-law Pam Jerome who was by Monica’s side during her long illness. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated in Jim’s memory to Our Lady of Victory Church (OLV). Please mail to c/o Dufresne Funeral Home, 216 Columbia St. Cohoes, NY 12047. At Jimmy’s request, there will be no funeral services. He will be laid to rest in St. Agnes Cemetery, Cohoes, NY with his loving wife Monica and their baby girl. Also, alongside his brother, John H. Bentley Jr. and his parents Albina and John H. Bentley Sr.
