Obituary of Joan M. Sweeney
Greenville – Joan Marie (Jura) Sweeney passed away on April 14, 2024, at the age of 89. She was born on March 29, 1935. She married John (Jack) Sweeney on September 11, 1958. After graduating high school in Massachusetts, she and Jack moved to Albany, NY, and eventually settled in Greenville, NY for the remainder of their lives. Joan raised five children, and in doing so she worked part time as a chambermaid at local resorts in the summer. As the kids moved out, she became a full time Administrative Assistant at Stiefel’s Research Institute in East Durham, NY. In her younger years Joan was an avid bowler. She also loved to read. Joan was not only a great cook, but also a great baker. Family and friends would gather year after year in her large farm house kitchen to dine on the savories and treats she would make for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Even a “regular” dinner was a fine dining experience! Jack and Joan had a bit of a travel bug, and camped through much of the US, and took a white-water raft down the Grand Canyon. They also spent some weeks traveling Europe and the Caribbean. Joan’s love of music, and her fine moves on the dance floor, were passed down to her five children. Joan was a kind woman with a good heart. She was lighthearted and fun. She laughed often and easy, even though her five children often gave her a run for her money! Joan is predeceased by her father and mother, William, and Mary (DeCoigne) Jura, her spouse, John Sweeney, and her daughter, Sharon Sweeney. Joan is survived by her son, Richard Sweeney, and her three daughters, Sandra (Daniel) Mead, Susan Ambesi, and Kelly (Wayne Smith) Sweeney. Joan is also survived by her two grandchildren, Ryan (Christa) Sweeney and Michelle (Robert) Weinberg. Joan is also survived by one great grandchild. May she rest in peace. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Thursday, April 18, 2024, 10:30AM at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 122 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes, NY. Interment will follow in the Gerald. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
