Irene M Giammattei Obituary

Cohoes – Irene Giammattei, 91, of Cohoes, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn, Albany on Friday, December 9, 2022. She was born and educated in Cohoes and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Piteras O’Konski. Mario and Irene shared their time for many years going to Florida, camping at Sacandaga and traveling to Italy. They lived for the wonderful dog Bridget who has passed away. Irene was a wonderful hairdresser for years and then went to work at NYS Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany. She was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Church in Cohoes and a member of the Rosary Society. You never saw Irene without her precious Rosary in her hands. She was so devoted to her religion and St. Michael’s Church. Devoted wife of Mario Giammattei of 69 years, they were joined together, and you never saw one without the other. Survivors in addition to her loving husband are her sister Carol Sala of Cohoes, her brother Raymond (Terri) O’Konski of Lansingburg, niece Debbie (William) Welch of Cohoes, nephew Joseph (Tricia) Sala of New Jersey, nephew Keith O’Konski of Lansingburg and niece Doreen (David) Krakat of Colonie, also survived by great nieces Brittany (Shanna) Welch, Michelle (Ryan) Coulter and her very good friend Rosemary Zandri of Cohoes. Infant daughter Tina Marie Giammattei predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Church, Cohoes on Monday at 9:00am. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waterford. The family will receive friends at the DUFRESNE FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 216 Columbia Street, Cohoes on Sunday from 2 to 5pm. Friends who wish to remember Irene in a special way may donate to St. Peter’s Hospice, Albany, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in her name. The family would like to thank the Hospice nursing staff on the fifth floor at St. Peter’s.
